What does imec.xpand do ?

imec.xpand is an independently managed venture capital fund that focuses on hardware-based nanotechnology innovations with imec technology, expertise, network and infrastructure playing a differentiating role. Imec.xpand turns hardware driven nanotechnology innovations into successful global companies, working closely with external start-up companies, imec researchers and investment team, as well as other investors. Currently, imec.xpand is making new investments with its 300 million Euro 2nd Fund and is managing the portfolio of its 1st Fund.

What is your impact?

  • Your focus will be on the pro-active analysis and follow-up of potential investment opportunities.
  • Together with the venture investment partners, you play an important role in all aspects of the due diligence (IP, finance, technical…).
  • You explore new health-tech (comprising Life Sciences, BioTech and MedTech) investment fields by providing sector-specific insights and actionable market intelligence.
  • You become part of marketing, conference planning, deal flow monitoring, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) assessments, audits, financial reporting, reporting to the board, process implementation and optimization, etc.
  • You represent imec.xpand at relevant industry conferences.

What is your technical background and experience?

  • You have a PhD or Masters' degree in the semi-conductor/nano-electronics field.
  • You have at least 3 years of working experience.
  • A background in Life Sciences, BioTech and/or MedTech on top of your knowledge of electronics is a plus.
  • You will use your background to do an in-depth analysis of potential imec spin off projects and existing startups in the healthtech field.
  • You will be involved in the investment process and the follow up of portfolio companies.
  • A financial background is not required, however considered as a plus.

  • You are a hands-on person and can get things done.
  • You have a solid level of autonomy and business judgement.
  • You have strong analytical skills and have an eye for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
  • You like to connect with others, you know how to build and maintain a network.
  • You understand that administration and documentation will be an important part of your tasks.
  • Having a network within imec is a plus.
  • You are fluent in English, knowledge of other languages is a plus.
  • You are preferably based in the Leuven region, since on site meetings within imec and imec.xpand will help you a lot in building your network.
  • You will have a positive impact on the diversity of the current imec.xpand team.

What is next?

  • After positive first screening of your CV, you will have an interview with Olivia Cardinaels, Talent Acquisition Expert from A-Z Talents.
  • She will discuss the different profiles with Frank Bulens, partner of imec.xpand. If there is mutual interest, an interview with Frank Bulens will take place.
  • The shortlisted candidates will also meet with the other partners of the fund.
  • After that, you will be asked to do a case study, assessed by both the imec.xpand partners and A-Z Talents.
  • If this all turns out to be positive, imec.xpand will work together with an external assessor, for an in-depth personality and competency assessment. We do this to make sure you blend in well in the team and can make the step towards the fund in confidence.
